RIMINI — For the second year in the row, Camp Woodie’s Chace Lodge will play host to a Native American Artifact show.
Hosted by the South Carolina Waterfowl Association and the Piedmont Archaelogical Society, the event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, will feature more than 1,000 artifacts from the Santee Cooper lakes region, said SCWA Executive Director David Wielicki.
“We will have everything from spearpoint heads, old pots and pottery to axes,” he said. “A lot of the stuff is from the Santee Cooper area and from the surrounding counties.”
He said last year’s show featured about 12 exhibitors who greeted about 300 people.
“It was very well received last year, so I do think we’ll see more people this year,” he said.
Wielicki said that guests can also bring their own artifacts and have them examined by archaeologists.
“We will have a couple of archaeologists there and people can bring their items in to see what type of material they might be made out of or how old they might be,” Wielicki said. “And, of course, they can also find out how valuable they might be.”
He said that interested guests can also display their items.
“There isn’t a charge to get into the show, but if you want to display items, you can purchase a display table for $10,” Wielicki said.
He said that both groups decided to host the show at Camp Woodie because of the camp’s goal of teaching kids about wildlife conservation.
“Native Americans have been a big part of the past and a big part of wildlife in North America,” he said. “This is something of interest to people who love the outdoors. They are out there hunting and fishing and they find arrowheads and then they want to learn more about them.”
