Summerton Town Council reports surplus

SUMMERTON — Just as he did last month, Summerton Town Administrator Bruce Behrens will have mostly good news for Summerton Town Council members on Tuesday.
They have a surplus of about $104,952.
“We’re up with revenues over expenditures,” Behrens said. “The only other new business that we will have is that we have a bill from Verizon for work that was done on Main Street as part of our streetscaping project.”
That project, which began in 2004, was finished earlier this year.
“We really don’t have a lot going on other than that, but we will probably have a lot of stuff in May,” Behrens said, noting that council would not start discussing the town’s 2009-10 budget, which must be approved by June 30, until a workshop scheduled for April 28.
“I’ll be working on the budget, but we’re not going to be talking about it until then,” Behrens said.
Nine months into the 2008-09 budget, however, Behrens said the town is looking good and he credited council’s conservative fiscal approach for that.
“We’ve got 69 percent of our revenue and our expenses are at about 62 percent,” he said.
As of March 30, the town has brought in about $1,033,452 and has spent $928,499.
“It’s right where you could hope to be,” Behrens said. “I think we’re definitely holding our own.”
Summerton Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Summerton Town Hall, 10 Main. St., Summerton.
