WOODS LEADS QUAIL HOLLOW
CHARLOTTE — The Masters is over. The Tiger & Phil show might just be getting started.
Tiger Woods matched the course record with a 30 on the front nine, where he closed with three straight birdies Thursday morning to finish off a 7-under 65 at the Quail Hollow Championship. Phil Mickelson followed in the afternoon by chipping in for eagle and making a remarkable par save from under a video board for a 67.
They did not play together, as was the case three weeks ago in an electric final-round pairing at Augusta National. But on a warm and breezy afternoon in Carolina, it seemed as though they were never far apart.
Steve Marino, who gave himself a chance at winning last week in New Orleans, and Robert Allenby also opened with 67s. Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, Hunter Mahan, Jeff Maggert and Lucas Glover had 68s.
Masters champion Angel Cabrera and defending champion Anthony Kim shot 70s.
NEW BOOK ACCUSES A-ROD
NEW YORK — A new, unflattering biography of Alex Rodriguez reportedly says he may have used steroids as early as high school and even after he joined the New York Yankees.
Rodriguez admitted in February to using steroids while with the Texas Rangers from 2001-03, but insisted he stopped before he was traded to the Yankees in February 2004. He brushed off a question Thursday about details from Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts upcoming book A-Rod that cast doubt on his earlier statements.
Im not going there, he said after homering in an extended spring training intrasquad game in Tampa, Fla. Rodriguez has been rehabbing from hip surgery in March and hasnt played for the Yankees this season.
BROWN, TORRETTA HEAD CLASS
NEW YORK — Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown and Gino Torretta, along with two-time All-American Chris Spielman, are among the 16 players to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Torretta won the 1992 Heisman for Miami and went 26-2 as the starter during Miamis heyday.
I went to Miami to have a chance to win a national championship. You dont know if youre going to get a chance to play and start, said Torretta, who along with Brown and former Syracuse coach Dick MacPherson attended a news conference at the Nasdaq stock market in midtown Manhattan.
Others selected for induction by the National Football Foundation are: Penn States Curt Warner; New Mexico States Pervis Atkins; Arizonas Chuck Cecil; Auburns Ed Dyas; West Virginias Major Harris; BYUs Gordon Hudson; Alabamas Woodrow Lowe; Stanfords Ken Margerum; Texas Steve McMichael; Iowas Larry Station; Georgia Techs Pat Swilling; and Nebraskas Grant Wistrom.
