Lynchburg ready to submit audit to Treasurer's Office

LYNCHBURG – Lynchburg Mayor Thompson Isaac has a vision for his town.

And he sees that brighter day for the town in the near future, he said.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, Isaac and council members took a look at a draft of the financial audit for 2007 to be submitted to the state Treasurer’s Office so state revenue can once again flow to the town.

“I’m going to call the Treasurer’s Office today to see if they’ll accept the draft audit,” he said. “We’ll have the final audit in a couple of weeks, I think. And we have begun work on the 2008 audit.”

Since Feb. 1, the state has been withholding revenue to the town for its failure to submit the required financial audit to the state. As of March 31, Lynchburg was one of 14 municipalities in South Carolina that had failed to fulfill the financial audit requirement. The others are Andrews, Atlantic Beach, Bonneau, Cross Hill, Gaston, Lincolnville, Olanta, Olar, Quinby, Sellers, St. Stephens, Ulmer and Vance.

Lynchburg was already receiving about $10,000 less annually from the state to pay about $85,000 it owes in back traffic fines.

Isaac said the town is also paying money it owes the state employment commission.

“I appreciate the cooperation of all our vendors,” Isaac said. “They need their money, too. We’re getting all this behind us. Yes, we’re struggling, but we’re paying off our debt.”

The town council gave first reading to its Fiscal Year 2010 budget, Isaac said. The proposed budget totals more than $360,000, said the mayor, and represents a balanced plan.

The town of Lynchburg will soon have a new face on council. Lynchburg voters will go to the polls on June 2 to fill two seats that expire on June 30.

The two seats open for election are those currently filled by Nancy Galloway and Bobby Morrell Sr. Galloway has not filed and will not be a candidate. Morrell has filed and will seek re-election. The only other candidate meeting the filing deadline is Jesse Slater Sr.

Barring a successful write-in candidacy, Morrell and Slater will fill the two council seats.

The Lynchburg Town Council meets at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month at the Teen Center on Magnolia Street.
