Man arrested at gunpoint
A 29-year-old man was arrested at gunpoint Sunday, a day after he had given Sumter County sheriff's deputies a false name during a traffic stop, according to the sheriff's office.
The original stop happened at 8 a.m. Saturday, when a man was spotted inside a black vehicle at a motel on Myrtle Beach Highway (U.S. 378) near Interstate 95, a sheriff's office report says.
When the man identified himself, deputies determined he wasn't who they were looking for and let him go. Later in the day, however, they discovered his real name was Robert Edward Gamble, of 8371 Two Mile Road, Lynchburg. They also discovered he had an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear in Sumter County General Sessions Court on a receiving stolen property charge.
About 3:15 p.m. Sunday, deputies spotted him inside the same vehicle on Narrow Paved Road (S.C. 53) near Myrtle Beach Highway. They conducted what is known as a "felony stop" because of his outstanding warrant and because he had given a false name, sheriff's Capt. James Turner said, and approached the vehicle with guns drawn.
They arrested him at gunpoint without incident and took him to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
