Man attacks race-car driver after speedway wreck
A 39-year-old man was jailed early Sunday after he attacked a race-car driver who had just wrecked during a race at Sumter Speedway shortly after midnight Sunday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
Two deputies who were working as security at the speedway, at 2650 Wedgefield Road, reported that they saw Russell Allen Jones, of 4195 Red Lane Road, Dalzell, run from the pit area onto the track after the wreck and start beating up the driver, Matthew C. Holland, 19, of Sumter.
A track official, Thomas R. Dollard Jr., 51, also watched the assault, and it was captured on video, the sheriff's office said.
The deputies arrested Jones, and he was taken to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. He also was told not to return to the race track, an arrest report says.
