Driver caught after road spikes flatten tires
A man tried to escape Sumter County sheriff's deputies Sunday evening but they caught him after not long after road spikes flattened his tires, according to the sheriff's office.
Rodney R. Green, 26, of 1780 Richbow Road, Rembert, initially pulled over when a deputy activated lights and sirens on Stamey Livestock Road after clocking Green driving 51 mph in a posted 35-mph speed zone about 8 p.m., an arrest report says. But Green sped off before the deputy could walk to his car, the report says.
During the ensuing chase, deputies deployed a spike strip on Broad Street just before the intersection with North St. Pauls Church Road. Both driver-side tires were flattened, the sheriff's office said.
He was arrested him and taken to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. A breath test revealed he had a 0.18 percent blood-alcohol content, the report says.
Green was booked in the jail on charges of resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and sirens, driving with an unlawful alcohol concentration, driving under suspension, second offense, and an open-container violation.
