1 arrested, 1 sought in Dubose Siding killing

A teenager was captured at his home in Lee County on Wednesday morning in connection with the June 17 shooting death of a 37-year-old man, and authorities named another teenager as the fourth suspect in the slaying.

William McKnight Smith, 19, of 64 Shiver Pond Road, Rembert, was arrested without incident, said Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis, and will be charged with murder.

Christopher Davis, of 5230 DuBose Siding Road, was killed at his home about 10:25 p.m. June 17 during a robbery, authorities said. At least three men — two of whom were wearing masks — came into his home and confronted him during what is thought to be a drug-related incident. A report shows 10 grams of marijuana and two scales were recovered from Davis' kitchen.

Lakiem Davar Butler, 19, of Camden, turned himself in at the Law Enforcement Center on June 22, the same day Anogory Santrell Slater, 22, whose last known address was 7471 Bennett Drive, Rembert, was also brought into custody. Both men are facing murder charges, Dennis said.

Antwan Raheem Johnson, 19, whose last known address was 1416 Halley Road, Kershaw, was named Wednesday as the fourth suspect in Davis' death. Johnson is a black man described as 6 feet 1 inch and 165 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is to be considered armed and dangerous, officials said.

"We said it was multiple suspects we were looking for to begin with," Dennis said. "But we're not ruling out other arrests."

A shotgun was used in the robbery but has not been recovered, he said, and none of the men arrested have given statements.

Dennis said after Slater and Butler's photos were published in The Item, his office received many calls on their whereabouts, and he thought the media pressure helped bring about peaceful arrests.

Davis was a Lee County native who received national attention when he was 16 and told authorities he encountered the legendary Lizard Man near Scape Ore Swamp in July 1988.
