All saltwater fishermen now need license in S.C.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND (AP) – Anyone who fishes in saltwater in South Carolina now needs a recreational saltwater fishing license.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports a new law that passed two months ago went into effect Wednesday.

Under the old law, only someone fishing in saltwater from a boat needed a license. Now, anyone fishing from a dock, pier or beach also needs the $10 permit.

Department of Natural Resources officials say they hope the new rule will help them track how many saltwater fishermen are in South Carolina and how many and what type of fish they are catching.

Anyone caught fishing without a license could face a fine of $105 to $465.
