The city of Sumter and Sumter County have approved ordinances related to garbage, but there is confusion voiced about what can be picked up by the city and what the county recycling stations accept.

And Al Harris, the director of public services, said the city is going to follow the provisions laid out in the city ordinances on what the city is supposed to pick up.

He said the city has been lenient in the past and that has caused confusion for some residents.

"So many things have been put out for us to pick up," Harris said, from toilets and couches to dozens of bushes.

To set the record straight, below are the items that the city picks up and what can be dropped off at the county recycling centers or the Sumter County Landfill on East Brewington Road.

Both the city and the county ask that the items be kept separate from each other. For example, don't mix cardboard with a bag of leaves.

City pick up:



  Household garbage placed in the city-supplied roll carts

  Aluminum and steel cans placed in the green city recycling bin

  Clean green and brown glass bottles and jars placed in the city supplied recycling bin. The city asks that lids be removed from the jars.

  Plastics, marked with numbers 1 or 2 on the bottom, can also be put in the recycling bin

  Newspaper, magazines and office paper tied in a bundle and placed next to the other recyclables

  Cardboard boxes placed in a pile separate from the other recyclables

  Leaves and pine straw placed in a bag by the side of the road

  Seasonal yard trimmings no bigger than 4 feet long and 8 inches around placed in a pile by the side of the road. Any larger trimmings should be taken to the county landfill.



County services:



  Appliances and scrap metal can be dropped off at the county landfill and the recycling centers around the county

  Car and boat batteries are accepted at the county recycling centers

  Bulk waste items like couches and mattresses can be dropped off at the recycling centers

  Aluminum cans can be brought to the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Steel food cans can be brought to the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Glass — clear, brown, and green — can be brought to the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Paper (office, newspaper, magazines) is accepted at the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Plastic, numbers 1 and 2, are accepted at the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Yard trimmings are accepted at the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers. The county recycling stations only accept trimmings on Saturdays and Sundays.

  Cardboard with no finish can be dropped off at the city site and the county recycling centers

  Tires are accepted at the city drop-off site and county recycling stations

  Used motor oil, filters and bottles can be taken to the city drop-off site and the county recycling centers

  Office paper and magazines are accepted at the city drop-off site only
