Shooting death believed to be accidental

The Assumption Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal death believed to be accidental in Labadieville (LAH'-buh-dee-vil).

Sheriff Mike Waguespack says 39-year-old Roland Harris Jr. was handling a pistol at his home in Labadieville at around 8 p.m. Saturday. He was rushed to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies were told Harris did not know there was a bullet in the chamber and it discharged, striking him in the shoulder and damaging a major artery.

Family members told deputies Harris had consumed a large amount of alcohol following a funeral.
