BISHOPVILLE – Old-time favorite activities and several new events will be featured at the 2009 Lee County Cotton Festival scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday.
Lee County Chamber of Commerce Director Pam Kelley said this year's festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.
"We really have something for everybody this year," Kelley said.
Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday with the closing of the two-block area of North Main Street between Church Street and Cedar Lane. Arts and crafts and food vendors will be on hand.
The Friday night street dance will kick off at 7 p.m. with the beach and variety music of Shamalama of Myrtle Beach. The main entertainment stage will be at Main and Council streets across from the Lee County Public Library.
For the first time in a number of years, beer will be available at the festival. The chamber will sell beer beginning at 6 p.m. in the old Andrews Theater on North Main.
Festivalgoers will be required to drink beer out of a cup, and they must wear an armband obtained from the Lee County Chamber of Commerce, the festival's sponsor. Armbands also will be available at the Andrews Theater.
Also on the schedule on Friday night will be the children's carnival on Cedar Lane, across the street from the South Carolina Cotton Museum, and a Wild West rodeo between the Food Lion and the old National Guard Armory on South Street. The rodeo will make its first appearance at the festival with shows at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Diamond S. Rodeos of Chesterfield will put on the rodeo, and events will include calf-roping and bull-riding.
Arts and crafts, food and merchandise vendors will return at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Lee County Historical Society will sponsor the Barbeque Cook-Off and Plant Sale on the front lawn of the old Woodward Library on North Main Street. Barbecue sandwiches will be sold beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The society will have a limited number of fragrant camellias for sale, said Bobbi Adams.
"These hybrids are the latest thing in the camellia world," she said. Purple and white iris from the James House garden will also be available. The plant sale will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon.
Music on Main Street will be provided by a disc jockey from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Always a crowd favorite, the Cotton Festival Parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will proceed on Main Street from the Food Lion parking lot through downtown.
A Saturday afternoon street dance, scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. will feature the music of A Touch of Class.
Other events scheduled include a pet show, Koss Motor Sports Car Show and children's games and activities, Kelley said.
"We will have our carnival set up across from the South Carolina Cotton Museum like we did last year, Kelley said.
The Taste of Lee social will serve as a prefestival event as it is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Opera House.
