Police searching for scammer
Authorities are searching for a 31-year-old man they say illegally obtained a $20,000 truck — a scam he may have pulled off in other counties, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
Anthony Lewis, of 429 Loring Drive, is being sought on a charge of obtaining goods under false pretense, a release from the sheriff's office states. On Oct. 13, Lewis reportedly obtained a white Ford F-150 Supercrew from someone in the 1500 block of Airport Road by showing another person's identification and telling the truck's owner he was going to the bank to get a loan. Authorities allege Lewis traded the Ford truck for a Chevy Astro van in Ridgeland.
Lewis was arrested on Oct. 8 for similar charges, the release states, but continued to scam people in Sumter, Richland, Jasper, Beaufort and other counties after making bail. The release also states he uses different aliases: Tony Lewis, Anthony Eddings, Anthony A. Lewis III and Quincy Montgomery.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sumter County Sheriff's Office at (803) 436-2700 or Crime Stoppers at (803) 436-2718. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
