A woman who was hit by a car Wednesday afternoon while crossing North Washington Street died Friday morning from her injuries.
Sherry Lynne Gilliam, 56, of 202 E. Liberty St. Apt. 46, died at 10:21 a.m. from massive head trauma, said Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock, adding that Gilliam will be sent to Newberry Pathology Associates for an autopsy.
Gilliam and Jerome Black, 52, a neighbor of Gilliams at Garden Circle Apartments, were walking together across North Washington just before its intersection with West Hampton Avenue when they were struck by a 1999 Buick driven by Susan Roberts. A police report indicates Gilliam and Black failed to yield right of way and were not using the crosswalk.
Gilliam and Black were transported by Sumter County Emergency Medical Services to Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and Gilliam was then airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said Blacks condition was stable.
Bullock said Gilliam lived full time in Walterboro and is an organ donor.
