Soldier reportedly AWOL arrested in Sumter
A 19-year-old soldier that was reportedly AWOL from Fort Jackson for about three weeks was arrested early Thursday morning after he apparently left his car running at a gas station.
Jontavis Adams, of 2446 Bragg St., Fort Jackson, was taken into custody about 4 a.m. Thursday after an officer saw his empty Toyota Camry running in the parking lot of a gas station in the 200 block of East Liberty Street and found his base ID card in the car.
An officer called Fort Jackson and the military police reportedly told the officer that Adams had been AWOL since Oct. 13 and was thought to be in the Sumter area.
A few minutes after that call, dispatchers told officers that a man wanted to report a stolen vehicle and wanted to talk about it. When the officer called, he reached Adams.
Adams reportedly met officers at a business at U.S. 15 South and Pack Road and was taken to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, as per orders from the MP at Fort Jackson, the report said.
