Active Day of Sumter Adult Daycare to hold Oktoberfest

Active Day of Sumter Adult Daycare Center will hold its first Oktoberfest from 9 a.m. to noon today at 930 Oswego Road. There will be free health screenings, free flu shots, costume contest for kids and adults, games, prizes and food. The children will enjoy trunk-or-treat. Call Cassandra Wise at (803) 775-4281.

Mayesville Area Community Coalition's 12th annual Halloween Safe Nite will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Mayesville Town Square. Halloween Trunk-or-Treat, sponsored by Sumter's Super Heroes, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sumter Law Enforcement Center, 107 E. Hampton Ave.

The Friends of the Sumter County Library Big Book Sale will be held as follows: 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, preview night for members of Friends of the Library only (join at the door); from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 3-4, and 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 9-11; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, "Bag O' Books Day," fill up a bag for $5 (bags issued at the door). A fall safety festival, presented by Central Carolina Technical College's Student Nurses Association and the Criminal Justice Association, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, in the parking lot of the Health Sciences Center, 113 S. Main St. In the event of inclement weather, the festival will be held at the Legal Studies Center, 111 S. Main St. Demonstrations will be given by Sumter Fire Department, Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Safe Kids. This event is free to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Sumter Branch NAACP 34th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, at the Sumter County Civic Center, 700 W. Liberty St. The Rev. Dr. James S. Cooper, presiding elder of the Northeast Conference Sumter District AME Church, will speak.

The Power of Forgiveness Clinic will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the South HOPE Center, 1125 S. Lafayette Drive. Tickets are $10 and can be obtained at New Era Beauty Salon. The clinic will be broken down into two sessions as follows: 10:30 a.m.-noon, "Copying with divorce: Give up or move on?"; and 12:15-1:30 p.m., "Singleness: Mr. Right or Mr. Right now?" The Sumter County Veterans Association's Veterans Day program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the old Sumter County Courthouse on North Main Street. The program will begin at 11 a.m. with Gen. Garrett of the Third Army serving as keynote speaker. There will be a Veterans Day parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street.
