Interim Superintendent Debbie Hamm provided details on the district's annual Hailey Bordeaux Memorial Scholarship dinner set for March 15 on Monday at the district's board of trustees meeting at Alice Drive Middle School.
Bordeaux, a 2011 Sumter High School graduate who was a junior early childhood education major at the University of South Carolina, died in a boating accident on July 4, 2014. She was a South Carolina Teaching Fellow and was on the President's List at USC. She also worked at the Children's Center at USC while in school.
The district's Teacher Forum, composed of current and former teachers of the year, established the memorial scholarship in her honor later that same year.
The scholarship is awarded each year to a district high school senior who is planning to major in education and attend a state college or university to become a teacher. The first scholarship, awarded in April 2015 to senior Rebecca Twitty, was for $3,000.
This year's Hailey Bordeaux Memorial Scholarship dinner fundraiser will be at Kingsbury Elementary School on Thursday, March 15, from 3:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Turkey tetrazzini dinners will be available for takeout only with drive-through and carryout service, according to district staff.
Tickets are $7 and are on sale now through March 7. To purchase tickets or for more information, district staff advise people to contact a Teacher Forum representative or Kingsbury Elementary at (803) 775-6244, or email Denice Merrick at firstname.lastname@example.org. Checks should be made payable to Sumter School District with "Hailey Bordeaux Memorial Scholarship Fund" on the memo line. All proceeds will benefit the Sumter School District Teacher Forum Hailey Bordeaux Memorial Scholarship for Future Educators. No tickets will be sold at the door on the day of the event, according to staff.
"Hailey's gift for inspiring children was enhanced by her warm and loving aura, her creativity and intelligence and her joyful personality," said Shelly Galloway, spokeswoman for Sumter School District. "It's the Teacher Forum's desire to honor Hailey's love for children and the public school classroom by naming the top scholarship in her memory."
This year's scholarship will be awarded at the Teacher Forum Celebration of Excellence, which will be held on May 1 at Crestwood High School, according to Galloway.
District high school seniors who are planning to major in education and attend a South Carolina college or university to become a teacher are welcome to apply for the scholarship, she said.
More from the school board meeting
- Also at Monday's board meeting, students from Alice Drive Middle School presented various Science, Technology, Engineering and Math projects highlighting work done from the school's STEM elective classes and after-school clubs.
- District administrators Arpad Jonas and David Laws also provided a technology update to the trustees. Since 2015, the district has purchased 20,000 Google Chromebooks to equip every student in grades kindergarten through 12th.
