On Dec. 22, 1924, in Sumter, the late Ingram Montgomery and Loris Budden Montgomery were blessed with another son whom they named Archie L. Montgomery, affectionately known as “Foota” by his loved ones.

Archie received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a World War II veteran and he was honorably discharged from the Army on Jan. 19, 1947, having received a victory medal. His military specialty was that of a rifleman. On Aug. 27, 1946, Archie wed the late Louise Conyers Montgomery and to that union they were blessed with 14 children. In 1968, after years of service, Archie retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Manhattan, New York, and in 1969, Archie began working for the New York City Department of Education as the supervisor of school safety, leading their special task force unit, where he retired from in 1989 after 20 years of service.

In 2001, Archie and his wife, along with their younger children of the home, relocated back to Sumter, where they rejoined LaGree AMEC under the leadership of the Rev. Henry Williams. At the time of his death, Archie was the father of the church as the oldest living member.

On Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, at the age of 93, Archie took his final rest at NHC HealthCare in Sumter.
