SCEAR (South Carolina Education Association of Retired Teachers) will meet at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the North HOPE Center.

Free income tax filing services and FAFSA application assistance will be provided on a walk-in basis from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays beginning Feb. 3 at 640 Broad St. (the Anything Paper building). Services include e-file and direct deposit 2017 tax year and processing taxes from three years back (2016, 2015 and 2014). Call (803) 883-5483 for information.

The Sumter AARP Tax-Aide Foundation will offer free tax assistance and preparation on a first come, first served basis on Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 5 through April 17 at the Lincoln Historical Center (former home of the Shepherd's Center), 26 Council St. On Saturday, Feb. 17, assistance will be available on an appointment basis only. "Saturday Morning Coffee with the Judge" will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall St. This free seminar will help attendees learn about estate planning. Featured topics include use of wills to pass assets to heirs and beneficiaries; burial policies / insurance policies; and burial plots. "Scholarship Bootcamp: Manning High School Edition" will be held 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Jan. 27, in the lecture hall of Manning High School, 2155 Paxville Highway, Manning. Services will include essay writing assistance, assistance in completing scholarship packets, college resum assistance and institutional scholarship search. Students need to sign up by speaking with a counselor in the guidance office.

The Sumter County Democrats will host its 2018 Precinct Reorganization at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Sumter County Judicial Center, 215 N. Harvin St., in the jury meeting room on the first floor. All local Democrats are encouraged to attend to elect precinct leaders to serve the county party. The Sumter County Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Temple Sinai, Church Street. Elizabeth Moses, of the Sumter County Museum, will present an update on the partnership of the temple and the museum along with providing insight into the history of the temple and the plans for the future.

The Network Organization of Women will host a free legal workshop with South Carolina Legal Aide Services 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin St. Featured topics will include landlord and tenant, foreclosure, probate and family law (divorce, custody, foster care, etc.). The Lee County Branch of the NAACP will sponsor its annual Freedom Fund Banquet at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Lee Central High School cafeteria, 1800 Wisacky Highway, Bishopville. Retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Detective Garry McFadden, of Investigation Discovery's "I Am Homicide," will speak.
