Bantams to play for middle school football championship for 4th time in 5 years


The Bates Middle School football team advanced to the championship game of the Sumter Middle School Conference for the fourth time in five years with a 28-20 victory over Mayewood on Wednesday at the Bates football field.

The Bantams, 7-0 on the season, will take on Manning Junior High School in the championship game. The game will be played on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Lakewood High School's J. Frank Baker Stadium.

Keion Brown ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Zyeir Gamble. K'shawn Boyd ran for two TDS and two 2-point conversions and Jalen White ran for a score.

Jabarri Tiller led the defense with six tackles and a forced fumble. Boyd had four tackles and a fumble recovery and Brent Brooks had four tackles.

Lee Central 22

Kingstree 14

KINGSTREE - Lee Central improved to 4-1 with a 22-14 double-overtime victory over Kingstree Junior High School on Wednesday at the KJHS field.

DeAngelo Century led the Stallions with 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner behind the blocking of offensive lineman Eurik Prickette. Somaki Hickman had 30 receiving yards.

Jaquan Powell scored LC's other touchdown on a fumble recovery.

The defense was led by Zaquan Jones and Tykawn Slater with 10 tackles apiece.

DALZELL - Thomas Sumter Academy closed its regular season with a 3-0 victory over Robert E. Lee Academy on Tuesday at Edens Gymnasium.

The Lady Generals, who improved to 23-2, won by the scores of 25-7, 25-20, 25-18.

Anita Cookey-Gam led TSA with 18 kills, while Taja Hunley had 12 and Carmen Silvester had eight. Sydney Daniel had 22 assists, Josie Reed had 18 and libero Diamond Gibson had 24 digs.

DALZELL - Thomas Sumter Academy ended its season with a 10-9 record after losing to Robert E. Lee Academy 2-0 on Tuesday at Edens Gymnasium.

Logan Scruggs led TSA with 10 assists. Maci Willetts had eight kills and Lindsay Daniel had 15 digs.
