Born on Sept. 6, 1951, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Vincent Lee Stephens and Bernice Capell Stephens. He was a retired long distance truck driver.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Cary L. Stephens Jr. of Florence and Tray Stephens (Jessica) of Sumter; a stepson, Joey Howle (Karrie) of Cheraw; 13 grandchildren; a brother, James Caples of Sumter; two sisters, Earliene Tennant (Thomas) of Summerton and Judy Hershberger of Manning; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John "Buck" Stephens and Vincent "Windy" Stephens; and a close friend, Henry Page Sr.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 3440 Nazarene Church Road.
Memorials may be made to the Sumter SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
