Clayton Plowden Sr., 61, took flight from this world of turmoil and pain and fell into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.
Born on Sept. 18, 1955, in Lee County, he was a son of the late William T. and Flossie Briggs Plowden. At an early age, he joined Unionville AME Church. He received his education in the public schools of Lee County. For many years, he worked as a roofer for Roof Co. in Sumter, before his health began to fail.
"Bill," as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Clayton (Latarsha) Plowden Jr.; stepchildren, Marcus, Jennifer and Robert, all of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brothers, Roosevelt Plowden, Nathaniel Plowden and Douglass (Cynthia) Plowden, all of Maryland; his sisters, Rosa M. Singletary, Martha (James) Vickers and Mary (Richard) Hammond, all of Fort Pierce, Florida, and Jannie Edwards, Beatrice Plowden and Mable (James) Spann, all of Mayesville; niece, Juanita McGainey, reared in the home; nephew, Wardell (Cynthia) Plowden, reared in the home; one aunt, Bessie Wilson of Mayesville; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Unionville AME Church, 1330 Swimming Pen Road, Mayesville, with the Rev. Alvin Webb, pastor, eulogist.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his son, 405 Dogwood Drive, Sumter.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
The procession will leave at 2:20 p.m. from the home.
Burial will be in Unionville AME Church cemetery.
