Darnell "Smoke" Frierson took his heavenly flight on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Carolina Healthcare, Charlotte, North Carolina.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1967, in Sumter, the eldest of two children born to Aleithia Ann Frierson. Darnell was a graduate of Mayewood High School Class of 1985. He was reared in St. Paul AME Church, Sumter. After graduation, he became employed by Bendix Corp. In November 1989, Darnell enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for 11 years and 11 months. Darnell was trained as a motor transport operator and earned the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Frierson served both stateside and overseas, including various assignments in Germany and Fort Stewart, Georgia. He received numerous decorations and awards for his outstanding service and contributions.

Loving memories of Darnell will be cherished by his mother, Aleithia Ann Frierson; sister, Shonda (Leroy) Frierson Frost of Sumter; nephew, Jayden Christopher Singleton of Sumter; grandmother, Lillian Goode of Sumter; aunt, Gloria Carter of Sumter; special relatives, the Reardon and the Bossard families of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and caring friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Simon Reardon; maternal great-grandparents, Charlie and Atha Frierson; paternal grandparents, Samuel and Estelle Reardon; and uncle, Charlie "CJ" Frierson Jr.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Mr. Frierson will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Paul AME Church, 835 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, with Pastor Frederick Graves, eulogist, and Dr. Friendly Gadson officiating. Interment will follow at Florence National Cemetery, Florence.

The family will be receiving friends at the home, 375 Boots Branch Road, Sumter.
