Born in Epsom, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Claude Thomas Burnette and Alice Mabel Gupton Burnette. Doris was a 20-plus year member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and dedicated volunteer at the front desk and taught Sunday school for many years. She also volunteered for years at Palmetto Health Tuomey. She was a woman of great faith with a servant's heart. Doris was filled with wisdom and had a deep insight to what was most important in life. She was always willing to share with others and was never too busy to stop and lend a listening ear.
Surviving are one daughter, Gwen Herod and her husband, Perry, of Sumter; one son, Larry Long and his wife, Michelle, of Irmo; one stepson, Bernie Long and wife, Valerie, of Oxford, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Lindsay Long, Preston Long, Allison Long, Jacob Herod and his wife, Ashley, Matthew Herod and his wife, Christi, and Ben Herod and his wife, Charlotte; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Owen Burnette; and one sister, Ruby Burnette.
A funeral service will be held at noon today at Alice Drive Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Brotherhood Sunday School Class of Alice Drive Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. to noon at the church.
