DORIS NELL GETER

Posted

Doris Nell Geter was born on Jan. 12, 1947, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Susan Furman. She departed this life on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at her residence in Mayesville.

She was raised by the late William Levan, the late Emily Fordham, the late Wilma Canty and Vermell Levan.

She married the late Willie "Bay" Geter Sr. on Dec. 15, 1962.

Doris gave her life to Christ at an early age and was a dedicated member of Tiverton Missionary Baptist Church, where she served diligently as the church treasurer and choir director. Doris spent the majority of her life influencing everyone around her to love God. Her favorite saying was "Only what you do for Christ will last." She stood by that by living her life through God. She was also one of the outstanding members of the Helen Geter Singers, a gospel group named after her late mother-in-law.

She leaves to cherish her memories: five sons, Willie Jr. (Linda), Michael, Christopher (Latisha), the Rev. Elijah (Letitia) and David (Courtney) Geter, all of Sumter; three daughters, Buffy (James) Bethea, Megan (Rodney) Riley and Dakoda Geter, all of Sumter; one brother, Khalil (Kareena) Sultan of Atlanta; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; two sisters-in-law; and two special brothers-in-law, Joe and Elijah. Doris also left, in her own words, "One thousand other children and grandchildren who made her happy."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie (Bay) Geter, on what would have been 56 years of marriage on Dec. 15; and a newborn baby girl who died at birth.
