Doris Sheard Smith, wife of Edward Smith, was born on Oct. 21, 1936, the youngest daughter of the late Henrietta M. Sheard and Prezzie Sheard, and was raised in Santee.

She departed this life on July 9, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

She attended Elloree Training School. After school, she moved to New York City and was employed by New York City Telephone, from which she retired after 20 years of service. She then relocated to Sumter and became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She extended a helping hand to family members and others with her generosity and love for all.

She is survived by her loving husband, Edward Smith; one daughter, Beverly (Kenneth) Garner of Brooklyn, New York; a granddaughter, Natalie Henry; a grandson, Elliott Sheard of Brooklyn; two sisters, Betty (Edward) Robinson of Brooklyn and Loretta (Garfield) Geddis of Melbourne, Florida; five brothers, Nathan (Marie) Sheard, Alfred Sheard and John Sheard, all of Melbourne, the Rev. Willie Sheard of Santee and Henry Sheard of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Sheard Plaier; and four brothers, Prezzie Sheard Jr., Herman M. Sheard, Steven Sheard and Richard A. Sheard.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. on Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, 803 S. Harvin St., Sumter, with Pastor Napoleon Bradford officiating and Pastor Marion H. Newton, eulogist.

Interment will follow at Smith Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 4 King St., Sumter, SC 29150.
