Dorothy "Dottie" Saunders Hamilton, 88, widow of William E. Hamilton, died on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia.

Born on April 29, 1929, in Aminata, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Maude Mary Powell Saunders. She was a member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church and retired from Sumter School District 2.

Survivors include four children, Susan Lynn Caughman of Columbia, Barbara Gail Dougherty of Sumter, Linda Ann Hogarty (Kurt) of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and William E. Hamilton II of Anderson; four grandchildren, Courtney Reitz (Chris), Kyle Hogarty (Jeremy Stichman), Thomas Dougherty and Tyler Dougherty; a great-grandchild, Aiden Reitz; and a sister-in-law, Adele Meadows (Jack) of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert James Saunders, William Henry Saunders and Edward Saunders Jr.; and a sister, Margaret Saunders Burgess.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Shaw Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert G. White officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, West Virginia.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Joy Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 2180 Sans Souci Road, Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Shaw Heights Baptist Church, 2030 Peach Orchard Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Palmetto Health Baptist ICU and Hospice floors for all of their care and compassion.
