Born and raised in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James and Martha Sumpter Willis. She lived in Fall River, Massachusetts, prior to settling in Fairhaven in 1999. Edith was a 1971 graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree and, in 1975, she received her master's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. She was a licensed social worker for 30 years for the Department of Veterans Affairs, until her retirement in 2004.
She is survived by her husband; a stepson, Terence R. Haaland of Fairhaven; a brother, Charles Willis of Sumter; two sisters, Helen Carter of Sumter and Barbara Colclough of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
