EMMA POLK BRAILSFORD

Posted

Emma Polk Brailsford was born on Dec. 22, 1936, to the late William Sr. and Rosa Lee Polk. She departed this earthly life on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

Emma was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Manchester High School Class of 1956. Upon graduating, Emma sought new opportunities and relocated to New York City. Never turning back, Emma gained employment with the W.F.R. Ribbon Co., where she found delight in her work and remained employed with the company for 55 years.

As a devout Christian, Emma's childhood was faithfully spent at Brown Chapel Union Methodist Episcopal Church. In her adult life, Emma's Christian journey continued and she became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where she served as a member of the missionary ministry.

Emma was united in holy matrimony to the late Willie Brailsford. Though no children were born of this union, Emma took great pride in caring for her younger siblings. Emma's love for her family and the New York Mets was unwavering, but her love for God was greater.

Special love and care was given through her illness by her two faithful and devoted niece and nephew, Vanessa Singleton and James D. Kelly.

Emma leaves to cherish her memories: six sisters, Noreen P. James, Annie P. Walters and Christine P. Kelly, all of Sumter, Julia P. Boston, Martha P. Singleton of Brooklyn and Carrie P. Canty of Irvington, New Jersey; two brothers, Christopher (Catherine) Polk of Pinewood and William (Berurene) Polk of Harrisburg, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, James Kelly of Sumter; several loving nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Willie; her parents, William Sr. and Rosa Lee; and her sister, Mary P. Pleasant.

Public viewing was held Tuesday at Job's Mortuary.

Mrs. Brailsford will be placed in the church at noon today for viewing until the hour of service.
