South Carolina continues to be ranked in the top 10 - No. 6 - for its rate of women killed by men according to the Violence Policy Center, a Washington-based organization.

Using data compiled from homicides in 2016, the center's study showed 48 women were murdered by men in S.C. in that year.

The Family Empowerment Forum, sponsored by Sumter County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and the YWCA, works to increase awareness of and prevent domestic violence locally.

The forum, "Strengthening the Family with Knowledge," will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Nettles Auditorium at USC Sumter.

The public is invited to attend. Community resources, financial advice and legal information will be discussed. Community organizations and vendors will be available.

A survivors reception will be held following the forum. Refreshments will be served. Those planning to attend the reception are asked to call Yolanda Wilson at (803) 773-7158.
