A fire erupted in a South Sumter warehouse off U.S. Hwy. 15 South Friday afternoon.

Employees working inside the warehouse on East Bee Street off the intersection with S. Lafayette Drive near the bridge notified emergency personnel of the blaze in the early afternoon on April 27, though the cause is not yet known, said Joey Duggan, spokesman for the Sumter Fire Department.

The almost ceiling-high pile of contents, which Duggan described as appearing to be shredded recyclables such as plastic and clothing, was being soaked from the fire engine’s ladder as crews drove front-end loaders to move the piles around to make sure there were no hidden fire pockets.

The building, which Duggan said used to house Korn Furniture complex, stands next to Midlands Medtech LLC, an ambulance transport service.

A fire report will be completed that will have further details.
