Pecans are a staple of the Southern Christmas table, often in fruitcakes; however, they're used in other dishes, too, as well as just for eating by the handful.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Sumter County Gallery of Art will offer for sale a variety of pecans from one of the area's largest producers of the popular nut.
The fifth annual sale of Young's Pecans is one of the gallery's largest fundraisers, with proceeds helping to support such programs as summer art camp and the art education scholarship fund, said gallery director Karen Watson.
She strongly suggested purchasing the pecan packages as gifts for friends, family and business customers as a way to support the gallery and take care of some Christmas shopping at the same time.
Fundraisers such as this are essential for the gallery to continue to offer its quality programs and exhibitions, Watson said.
"This year is pivotal to the gallery's ability to continue operating," she said. "Over the past three years, the gallery has experienced reductions in all sources of funding, including a significant reduction of our county funds."
The list of Young's Pecans available ranges from pecan halves to praline pecans, double-dipped chocolate pecans, a 2-pound "Seventh Heaven Sampler Tin" and "The Favorite Foursome" to a "Classic Collectible Gift Box," "Pecan Duets" and even butter-roasted cashews. There is an affordable range of prices, too, Watson said, adding "Everyone loves Young's pecans."
A brochure and price list are available at the gallery, 200 Hasell St., in the Sumter County Cultural Center/Patriot Hall.
A 10 percent discount and free delivery to home or business is available on orders totaling more than $350 or more.
