Gators defend region VI-4A title; Sumter girls throttle West Florence

DARLINGTON - Lakewood High School's varsity boys basketball team defended its Region VI-4A title on Thursday with a 50-48 victory over Darlington at the DHS gymnasium.

The Gators finished 7-1 in region play and are now 16-9 on the season. They earned the region's No. 1 seed in the state playoffs and are assured of three home games as long as they win.

Grant Singleton led LHS with 18 points. Ahkeem Lawson added 11.

On Tuesday in Lugoff, Lakewood defeated Lugoff-Elgin 59-51.

Lawson led the way with 17 points. Juwan Perdue had 16, Quinten Hodge 13 and Singleton 12.

Manning 66

Hanahan 54

MANNING - Manning High School clinched second place in Region VII-3A with a 66-54 victory over Hanahan on Wednesday at Thames Arena.

The Monarchs improved to 16-6 overall and finished 6-2 in region play. They will be at home on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Cory Graham led MHS in scoring with 15 points. DJ Felder, Darius Williams and Isreal Brown each had 10. J.J. Pendergrass added eight and Cam Cain seven.

On Monday in Manning, MHS defeated Timberland 62-47. Brown had 14 and Williams 13.

Calhoun 41

DALZELL - Thomas Sumter Academy improved to 7-3 in SCISA Region Ii-2A with a 55-41 victory over Calhoun Academy on Tuesday at Edens Gymnasium.

Dante Linder led 11-9 TSA with 15 points, while Eli Kessinger had 11. Tyler Millwood grabbed 11 rebounds and Dazjuan Butler had nine.

SUMMERTON - Scott's Branch High School lost to C.E. Murray 49-41 on Monday at the SB gymnasium.

Terrence Yon led the Eagles with 14 points. Lavontae Fleming added eight.

B TEAM BASKETBALL

Northside Christian 16

LEXINGTON - Thomas Sumter Academy finished its season with a 30-16 win over Northside Christian on Thursday at the NS gymnasium.

The 11-3 Generals were led in scoring by Brandon Burns with 10. Landon DeLavan and Sammy Kessinger both had seven.

MS BASKETBALL

Spaulding 26

SUMMERTON - Scott's Branch Middle School defeated Spaulding 64-26 on Tuesday at the SB gymnasium.

Tariq Coard led the Eagles with 15 points. Zakee Rendell had 12 as did Randy Gibson.

GIRLS

Sumter 68

West Florence 28

Sumter High School's varsity girls basketball team raced out to a 22-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back as it defeated West Florence 68-28 on Thursday at the SHS gymnasium.

With the victory, the Lady Gamecocks improved to 15-6 on the season and 7-3 in Region VI-5A. They are tied for second in the region with Conway. The teams will play a special tiebreaker game on Saturday at 3 p.m. the West Florence High gymnasium.

Tamerah Brown had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead SHS. Latrice Lyons had 18 points and Carnasia Wells 10.

C.E. Murray 47

SUMMERTON - Scott's Branch High School had three players score in double figures in a 55-47 victory over C.E. Murray on Monday at the SB gymnasium.

Mary Wimberly and Chaniya Monroe both had 12 points to lead the Lady Eagles. Teja Madison added 10 and Cambria Parker and Tonia Lawson both had nine.

JV BASKETBALL

Laurence Manning 29

Wilson Hall 28

MANNING - Laurence Manning Academy outscored Wilson Hall 9-3 in the fourth quarter to pick up a 29-28 victory on Thursday at Bubba Davis Gymnasium.

Eaddy Gamble and Audrey Bennett each had nine points to lead the 10-5 Lady Swampcats. Breanna Boykin added eight.

Gracyn Coker led the 14-4 Lady Barons with 11 points. Becca Cromer added five.

LMA will face either Florence Christian School or Orangeburg Prep on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a semifinal game in the SCISA Region II-3A JV tournament in Manning. Wilson Hall will face either FCS or OP on Saturday at 3 p.m.
