SUMMERTON – Harold Mendel Bennett, 72, husband of Kythern Irene Justice Bennett, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, at his home.

Born Feb. 6, 1936, in Morlington, Ark., he was a son of the late Jessie Commodore and Jewell Eldridge Dixon Bennett. He was a retired U.S. Air Force technical sergeant at Langley Air Force Base with 23 years of service, former owner and operator of Flea Lawnmower business in Manning, and former employee of Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton, W.Va., with 10 years of service in the biomedical maintenance department. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are two sons, Harold M. Bennett Jr. of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Timothy Lockhart of Sumter; two daughters, Gloria Marshall and her husband, George, of Hemphill, W.Va., and Tammy Hodge and her husband, Perry, of Greeleyville; a brother, Charles Bennett and his wife, Annie, of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Tracy Lockhart, and two brothers, Richard Wayne Bennett and William E. Bennett.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Ed Watson officiating. Pallbearers are Larry Whorton, Larry Norwood, Ronnie Benton, Norwood McIntosh, Mickey Plowden and Mike Donahue. Burial with full military honors will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1211 Pleasure Drive, Summerton.
