Hunger gets canned with help from Sumter Police Department

Grocery lists this time of the year usually consist of turkeys, stuffing and other fixings, but Sumter Police Department is asking the community to consider adding a few extra canned foods to the shopping cart to help someone less fortunate have a full belly this holiday season.

The Pursuit to End Hunger, sponsored by the police department, is one of multiple community service projects the agency holds each year.

"It's something we do to give back," said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department.

Non-perishable items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday in the lobby of Sumter Police Department, 335 N. Lafayette Drive. All donations will be delivered to local food banks.

Anyone who would like to donate but cannot make a delivery Thursday can call Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700 to learn how to participate.
