She was born on Sept. 17, 1962, to Sarah Elizabeth Conyers Charles and Damon (Buck) Williams. After being born in Sumter, Irene and her mother moved to Harlem, New York City, where she attended Jane Addams High School. Having held several positions in various industries, Irene settled in to the food industry, that's where she perfected the art of fried chicken. Irene then moved back to South Carolina in the early 1980's and continued cooking. She loved to cook, bake, watch scary movies, music and fishing. Irene enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Irene leaves to cherish her loving memories: her daughter, Juanita; granddaughter, Nova; her mother, Sarah Conyers Charles' father, Damon (Buck) Williams; stepfather, Richard N. Charles; brother, Eugene; sisters, Victoria and Makeba; many half siblings; and aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem Ave., with Elder Frank Garret officiating.
