Born in Erwin, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Zola E. and Lillie Whittington West. Mr. West retired from the United States Air Force and later went on to retire from United Insurance of America. He led the choir for many years at Sumter Church of God and was a current member of Bethesda Church of God. He was a faithful Christian and sang with both the Providence and Disciple Quartet. He was an avid gardener. He loved softball and playing the harmonica. He was a cancer survivor. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a wonderful "Papa" and will be dearly missed by all.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ritchie K. West and his wife, Kimberly Ann West, of Sumter; a sister, Deraline McAllister of Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren, Nichole C. West and her husband, Mike Vigil, Randi K. West, Walker James West, Christopher P. Reardon and his wife, Diana, Jordan A. Korb and her husband, Bryce, Mallory R. Lovice and her husband, Andrew, and Ted L. Westmoreland; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonia D. West; one grandson, Jason H. Robertson; and a sister, Doris Lambert.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Bethesda Church of God with the Rev. H. Albert Sims officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday at Bullock Funeral Home.
