JERVIA ALSTON

Jervia Alston was born on Feb. 14, 1941, in Sumter, the second child of the late Ryttenburg Altson Sr. and Janie Singleton Alston. He departed this life on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

Jervia was married to the late Ida Mae Choice Alston. To that union, they were blessed with two sons. He was reared in Sumter County, where he attended the public schools. To Jervia, being a Christian meant showing it through his daily walk of life. At an early age, he joined High Hills Missionary Baptist Church. Jervia was deeply involved in church auxiliaries, which allowed him to become a very active, dedicated and faithful trustee. Jervia was employed as a heavy equipment operator and construction worker with Avery Lumber Co. and Brown and Martin Construction Co.

Those left to cherish his fond memories and witness his homegoing are two sons, Jervia Jemol (Katrina) Alston of Horatio and Shawn Tyrone (Vinetta) Alston of Dalzell; three grandchildren, Camille Cunningham of Nashville, Tennessee, and JerAsia and JerNiya Alston of Horatio; four step-grandchildren, LaQuetta, Shawn, Lakyshia and Roosevelt, all of Sumter; great-granchildren; three brothers, Nelson Alston of Albrightville, Pennsylvania, Samuel (Shirely) Alston of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and Samuel C. "James" (Shirley) Alston of Dalzell; two sisters, Minnie L. (George) Thomas and Harriett Alston, both of Dalzell; one sister-in-law, Queen Mack of Wedgefield; one brother-in-law, William "Pete" Prayleau of Temple Hill, Maryland; three aunts, Mary S. Prioleau and Martha S. Prioleau, both of Dalzell, and Albertha Singleton of Bronx, New York; one godchild, Corbin Whittfield of Boston; three lifelong friends, Earnest Ricks, James Shannon and Ervin Richardson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ryttenburg Alston Jr. and Andrew "George" Alston; one sister, Ida Mae Prayleau; grandparents, Nelson and Rosa B. Singleton and Harriett Brown; six uncles; five aunts; five sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Mr. Alston will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. on Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at High Hill Baptist Church, 6750 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, SC 29040, with Pastor Donald Amis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Dennie, the Rev. Dr. Katie Roach, the Rev. Robert McDuffie, the Rev. Wallace Preaston, the Rev. Keith Mays and the Rev. Derrie L. Grant. Interment will follow at High Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 6325 Catchall Road, Dalzell.
