Johnny's Garden not damaged after car fire

Anyone who may have been in the market for a healthy smoothie or juice for lunch on Monday may have been prevented from doing so by a scene of smoke and flames.

A vehicle erupted with fire in the parking lot in front of Johnny's Garden Juice Bar, 504 Miller Road, about 11:35 a.m. on Monday, bringing the Sumter Fire Department to the scene for almost an hour, according to an incident report.

The fire apparently began in the engine compartment of a 2008 Nissan Altima and was confined to that area but not before emitting visible smoke throughout the lot.

A cause of the fire is not yet known, according to the report.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,500, and about $1,000 was thought to have been saved.

The building did not sustain any damage.

According to the narrative in the report by the fire department's Judson Coker, there was a delay in response time to the scene because the units had to come from training grounds.
