Johnson elected as state Region 5 director

MANNING - Kimberly O. Johnson was elected Region 5 director of the South Carolina School Boards Association at the group's annual Delegate Assembly held this past weekend in Columbia.

"I am truly grateful to God for yet another opportunity of service," Johnson said Tuesday. "While this is surreal, I am both honored and humbled. As a younger child, I can remember attending school board conferences with my dad, who was a school board member for 12 years, and wishing it could be me one day."

According to the SCSBA, Johnson's Region 5 includes Clarendon districts 1, 2 and 3, Florence districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and Williamsburg County school districts.

Johnson is serving in her fourth year on the Clarendon School District 2 Board of Trustees. She is also the president of Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce. She also serves on the Santee Lynches REC Advisory Board, the Clarendon County Habitat for Humanity Board, the HopeHealth Board of Directors and the McLeod-Clarendon Hospital Advisory Board.

Johnson said it was Clarendon County School District 2 Board Chairman Arthur Moyd Sr. who encouraged her to pursue this position.

"He offered his support from day one, and he never wavered from that," she said. "Shortly after, my local board supported me with a unanimous nomination, and the process began."

The current longest-serving member of the Clarendon 2 board, Robert Fleming, said he doesn't think Clarendon 2 has ever had a board member serve as a regional director.

"This is a big honor," Fleming said, who has served on the Clarendon 2 board for 25 years. "It's a wonderful thing for Kim and Clarendon School District 2. We will have a voice and representation on the board. She will do a tremendous job."

Johnson, a 1998 graduate of Manning High School, served eight years in the military and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from the University of South Carolina in 2006 and a Master of Social Work degree from USC in 2010. Shortly after graduation from USC, Johnson joined the Bank of Clarendon and serves as the bank's community development officer and marketing director. In 2011, Johnson graduated from the South Carolina Bankers School of the South Carolna Bankers Association, and in 2014, she graduated from the American Bankers Association School of Bank Marketing and Management.

"One of my favorite Scriptures, Proverbs 18:16, is a reminder of God's promise to me," she said. "And I paraphrase, 'He allows my gift to make room for me, and He keeps me in the presence of great people.' The SCSBA is a great organization, and I look forward to working together to improve the education for our children in South Carolina."
