Knights travel to face Chapin in 4A playoffs

The Crestwood Knights enter the 4A football state playoffs with a 5-5 record and as the No. 3 seed from Region VI. They will be going on the road to face 7-3 Chapin in the first round today at 7:30 p.m.

Coming off a 40-14 victory over Sumter School District rival Lakewood though has Crestwood head coach Roosevelt Nelson liking what his team is doing.

"I feel pretty good where we're at right now," said Nelson, who has led Crestwood to the playoffs for the second straight year. "We had another good week of practice, and we're getting our quarterback more integrated into our running game. We're as healthy as we can be right now at this point of the season."

Bradley has passed for 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns against six interceptions. He has also rushed for four touchdowns.

Wide receiver Joshua Simon has caught seven of those touchdowns passes and has over 450 yards receiving. He had a big game against Lakewood, catching seven passes for 132 yards and two TDs.

The Eagles finished in a 3-way tie for first in Region V along with Dreher and Lower Richland. LR got the top seed based on the region's tiebreaker while Chapin is second and Dreher third.

"I don't think of them as a 7-3 team," Nelson said. "They are a very good team."

Chapin is averaging 28.8 points a contest. While it has almost 100 more rushing attempts than passing attempts, Chapin has passed for 1,958 yards and rushed for 1,410.

"They are very effective in what they do," Nelson said of the Eagles. "They've got a big offensive line and they run the ball well. They use two quarterbacks and they've got an all-conference wide receiver."

The wide receiver is Xzavion Thomas, who has 58 catches for 749 yards and nine touchdowns. Case Barber has 33 catches for 491 yards and three TDs.

The quarterbacks are Roger Pedroni and LaRob Gordon. Pedroni has competed 91 of 142 passes for 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns against five interceptions. Gordon has hit on 73 of 108 attempts for 891 yards with nine TDs against one INT.

Taison Thomas leads in rushing with 527 yards and five scores on 92 attempts. Mark Shealy has 433 yards and three scores on 98 attempts.

The Crestwood defense is led by Shrine Bowl defensive lineman Chris Simon. He has 30 tackles and nine quarterback sacks. Defensive back Sheddrick Ervin, who will play in the Touchstone Energy North-South All-Star Game, has 32 tackles and one interception with seven passes broken up.

"I feel like our defense has continued to get better as the year has gone along," Nelson said.
