Is there a 2nd connection between Tuskegee Airmen and Shaw?

The artist rendition for Veterans Park depicted in this year's Memorial Day Celebration Program shows a P-47 "Razorback" painted in the colors of the famous Tuskegee Airmen "Redtails."

Other than Sumter being the home of three honored members of this group, what is the connection between the Tuskegee Airmen, Shaw Field and Sumter? Would it not be more appropriate to have a replica of a "T-6" Texan training plane used at Shaw for training? If that is not possible shouldn't the aircraft be painted in the actual colors of the aircraft that flew at Shaw during and after World War II?
