Mary Lee Maple Frierson was born on July 27, 1934, in Sumter, the eldest child of the late Joseph Sr. and Sallie Davis Maple. She was affectionately known as "Sister." She peacefully departed this life on Oct. 10, 2017, at her home.

Mary was married to Jesse Frierson Jr. for 65 years. Mary was dedicated to God, her family and her work. She was educated in the Sumter County education system but was unable to get her high school diploma. However, she was able to go back and finish her high school education and graduated in 1975. Mary worked at Campbell Soup for more than 15 years. She also earned her license in cosmetology in 1963 and worked as an apprentice at Edell Harvin's Beauty Salon before opening her own small business in the 1970s called Mary's Hair Care. While operating her own salon, she also worked as a private certified nursing assistant. She was devoted to her work and took pride in everything that she did. She also did volunteer work for organizations such as the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and the Voter Registration Board.

Mary devoted her life to Christ at an early age. She was originally a member of the Plaza Church of Christ and then she went on to help start the Kingsbury Road Church of Christ. Mary was a devout Christian, helping to spread the word of God. She loved talking about God to those that would listen. She opened her home to those seeking the word of God, conducting Bible studies throughout her lifetime.

Mary enjoyed many hobbies. She had a love for gardening and cake decorating. She loved to sing gospel hymns.

She leaves behind to cherish her loving memories: her beloved husband of 65 years, Jesse Jr.; her loving children, Jesse Frierson III (Inithia), Reva Frierson and Patricia Brown; her siblings, Emma Dennis (James), Larry Maple (Elouise) and Louise Maple; her 11 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind: sisters-in-law, Reva Dell Simmons and Emily Maple; one aunt, Naomi Swinton; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Frierson; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by both parents, Joseph (Sallie) Maple Sr.; three brothers, James Maple Sr., Joseph Maple Jr. and Fredrick Maple Sr.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jesse Sr. (Mary Alston) Frierson; her son, Sammie Frierson; brother and sister-in-law, Roy (Martha) Kelly and Mille Maple; two granddaughters, Jeanette and Michelle Dinkins; one nephew, James Maple Jr.; and one great-granddaughter, Santana Dinkins.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Kingsbury Church of Christ with Brother Melvin Sapp officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.

The family will be receiving friends at the home, 906 Jensen St., Sumter.
