Mary "Sister" Peterson Rogers, 83, departed this life on Friday, May 11, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1934, in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Levi B. Peterson and Jannie Fulwood-Peterson. Mary was baptized at an early age and became a member of Mount Sinai AME Church. Mary attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1953 graduate of Lincoln High School. She continued her education at Morris College, pursing her degree in early childhood. She relocated to New York City to pursue her nursing career. She was employed by the Jewish Home Hospital of New York City.

Mary was a member of Emmanuel AME Church in New York City, where she served in the following ministries: Stewardess No. 3, senior usher, lay organization, inspiration and anthem Choirs. She then returned home in 1990 to help care for her mother and reclaimed her membership at Mount Sinai AME Church under the pastorate of the Rev. Davie Brown, where she served faithfully as president of the junior usher board and pastor aide. Sister Rogers was also appointed as class leader under the pastorate of the Rev. Moses McCants. She was an active member of the gospel and mass choirs. She was a member of the Anointed Jubilaires of Sumter. Mary enjoyed serving and caring for others with laughter that brought joy to others. She served wholeheartedly unto the Lord in all that she did. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 27.

Mary was married to David Rogers and they were blessed with one child.

Loved ones left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Wanda Rogers of Sumter; one grandson, Gary Rogers of Sumter; one sister, Janie L. Peterson of the home; one sister-in-law, Lillian Peterson; nieces and nephews, Terry (Violet) Quattlebaum of Washington, D.C., Glen Deas, Kathleen (Wade) Brown and Virgil (Geraldine) Burroughs, all of Sumter, Leroy Peterson, Michael Peterson, Donnell (A. Benet) Peterson and Brenda (Joe) McAlister, all of Columbia, Andre Gilliard of Atlanta, Jacqueline McElveen of Kingstree, William (Angela) Peterson and Cynthia Fairley, both of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kenneth (Arian) Peterson of Spartanburg, Theresa Kelly of Manhattan, New York, Shirley (Ernest) Smith of Greeleyville and Roger Burroughs of Philadephia; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, William T. Peterson, Llyod Peterson and Levi Peterson Jr.

Public viewing will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Mrs. Rogers will be placed in the church at noon on Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Mount Sinai AME Church, 5895 Mt. Sinai Church Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Marie Deas Webb officiating and Pastor Donnell Peterson, eulogist.

Interment will follow at Edwards Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 15 Rast St., Sumter, SC 29150.
