Funeral services for Norma Jean Abney Gamble will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Matthews AME Church, 226 Main St., Lynchburg, with the Rev. David L. Bright, pastor, and the Rev. Donna Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Edwards Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Mrs. Gamble will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for further viewing until the hour of service.

The public may view from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Norma transitioned on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, at her home in Lynchburg.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Hayward Sr. and Bernice Starks Abney. She was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia and was a graduate of Overbrook High School. She was previously employed by PNC Bank and the Department of Labor. After retiring to Lynchburg with her husband, she joined St. Matthews AME Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bernadine Garris; and a brother, Hayward Abney.

She leaves to mourn: her husband, Henry; son, Terry (Corine) Oden of Washington; sisters, Gwendolyn Knight of Marlton, New Jersey, Cheryl Evans, Muriel Waters and Vandelyn Miller, all of Philadelphia; brothers, Ronald of Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, Gerald (Gilda) of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, Clinton of (Wanda) Malvern, Pennsylvania; grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
