A 7-year-old boy was seriously injured in a hit-and-run Wednesday evening, officials said.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. David Jones said the boy was struck in the roadway and that the vehicle drove away from the accident, which occurred at U.S. Highway 15 South near Cockrill Road about 6:35 p.m. on Jan. 10.

The child was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia with serious injuries.

It is not yet known what led up to and caused the collision, Jones said.

Troopers have since located the vehicle involved in the accident and are processing identifying information, Jones said, but anyone with information is still asked to contact SCHP.

Anyone with information can call 1-800-768-1506 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC (274-6372). Callers can remain anonymous and may receive a cash reward.
