Pop Warner football and cheer registration set for June 16

Registration for the YAS Pop Warner Sumter Spartans Football & Cheer tackle program will be held on Saturday, June 16, at Brand University located at 4676 Broad St.

The registration event will also consist of a car wash and fish fry fundraiser. It will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m.

KELLEYTOWN - Lathan Todd threw a 4-hit complete game to lift the Sumter P-15's to a 4-1 American Legion baseball victory over Hartsville Post 53 on Monday at Jimmy White Park.

The right-handed Todd finished with five strikeouts for Sumter, which improved to 3-1 overall. The P-15's remained undefeated in League III play at 3-0.

Sumter pushed across a run in the first inning and made it 3-0 with a 2-run single by Cory Blackley in the second. The P-15's added their final run in the fourth.

Rashard Coleman had a hit and scored Hartsville's only run.

Post 53 fell to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Hartsville plays Sumter at Riley Park today beginning at 7 p.m.

Manning 1

The Sumter Junior P-15's improved to 5-0 with a 7-1 American Legion junior baseball victory over Manning-Santee Post 68 on Monday at Riley Park.

Sumter scored five runs in the second inning. Dustin Kennedy had three of the Junior P-15's seven hits and Keaton Price added two. Daniel Gamble had two of Manning's four hits.

Seth Posey went the distance on the mound for Sumter. He struck out nine.

Basketball camp starts Monday

A basketball camp for girls entering grades 5-8 will be held June 11-14 at the Manning First Baptist Church gymnasium.

The camp is free and will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. Jack Gibson and Betsy Reynolds will run the camp.

Emphasis will be on passing, dribbling, shooting and defensive skills.

Tigers' Beer Houston's first-round pick

CLEMSON - Clemson junior outfielder Seth Beer was selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Houston Astros on Monday.

Beer was the No. 28 overall pick and was Clemson's first first-round draft pick since Richie Shaffer was chosen in the first round in 2012. Beer was also the Tigers' 14th first-round draft pick in history.

Beer is Clemson's second 3-time All-American in history, including 2018, when he was a first-team All-American and hit .301 with 22 homers, 11 doubles, 54 RBIs, 64 runs, a .642 slugging percentage, 54 walks, a .456 on-base percentage and a steal in 63 games.

In his 3-year career, he is hitting .321 with 56 homers, 41 doubles, a triple, 177 RBIs, 172 runs, a .648 slugging percentage, 180 walks, 42 hit-by-pitches, a .489 on-base percentage and four steals in 188 games.

He became the first Tiger in history to hit 16 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons. He has also reached base via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 178 of his 187 career games with a plate appearance.
