Rodney was the youngest out of 12 children. He was educated in Essex County Public School District. Rodney received his Bachelor of Arts at Montclair State and his Master of Arts from New York University. In 1968, Rodney enlisted in the United States Army, where he served faithfully and selflessly as a sergeant in the 63rd Signal Battalion. He also served in the Vietnam War. Rodney worked for the United States Postal Service as a safety inspector supervisor, until he retired in 2009. He took great pride in his work. Rodney enjoyed gardening, creating props, making his hot apple cider and socializing with all.
Rodney leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Paula Koonce; his two devoted sons, Rodney Jr. (Rodnique) of Pennsylvania and Terrell Koonce of Virginia; five daughters, Shayla Koonce of New Jersey, Pamela Benjamin (Jamie) of Arizona, Lawanna Simmons (Anthony) of North Carolina, Karrell Darden of North Carolina and Lynn Herbin of South Carolina; two sisters, Mildred Webb of New Jersey and Doris Koonce of New Jersey; two brothers, Perry Koonce (Estelle) of Colorado and John Koonce of New Jersey; sister-in-law, Fredericka Hills of Arizona; brother-in-law, Victor Brunson of Nevada; 18 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Roxie; six brothers, James "Jimmy," Ernest, Alva, Larry, Edward and Lawrence; and one sister, Eloise Strickland.
Public viewing will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. Koonce will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. on Friday for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 714 Camden Highway, Bishopville, with Elder Deidra Conyers officiating. Interment will follow at Florence National Cemetery, Florence.
The family will receive friends at 207 Casa Nova Court, Bishopville, SC 29010.
