Ruth "Rufus" Spain Briggs Dobson, beloved wife of the late Col. Robert R. Dobson, died on April 27, 2018.

Born in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late James Richardson "Tourie" Briggs and Ruth B. Briggs. She was a graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill. She was a teacher in Summerton before marrying Robert Dobson and traveling the world. After 30 years as an Army wife, she and her husband, Bob, a decorated officer, retired to Sumter. Rufus was a dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross via The Grey Lady Service. She served as a docent at the Sumter Gallery of Art and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed her book club, bridge games, "winesicles" and was an avid University of South Carolina Gamecock football fan. She loved entertaining family and friends and was a most gracious hostess. Rufus was a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter, Sumter.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Dobson Landreth and her husband, Les, of Norfolk, Virginia; grandson, Roy Briggs Lockwood and his wife, Sherry, of Bloxom, Virginia; granddaughter, Dr. Brooke Spain Rudis and her husband, John, of Chesapeake, Virginia; sister, Annie Margaret B. Huggins of Florence; three great-grandchildren, Alexa Rudis, Colby Rudis and Collin Rudis. She is also survived by her loyal puppy, Sassy.

She was preceded in death by brothers, James R. Briggs and Willie T. Briggs.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Church of the Holy Comforter with interment following in the Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Comforter Memorial Garden Fund, 213 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.
