Funeral services for Dr. Sharon Romaine Solomon Cruz will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 401 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Marvis Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Dr. Cruz will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for public viewing until the hour of service.

Dr. Cruz, 63, transitioned on Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, in Valley Stream, New York.

A native of Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Martha Scott Solomon, Carl Alexander Jr. and the late Thelma Louise Scott Vann. Sharon Solomon Cruz attended public schools in Sumter and Kingstree. She graduated from Southeastern High School in Detroit. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the Metropolitan College of New York and her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Long Island University. Dr. Cruz was employed with the City of New York for more than two decades. Upon retiring, she opened a community health clinic in Queens, New York.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Vann; and a brother-in-law, Ignacio Cruz Jr.

Survivors include: father, Carl Jr. and his wife, Gracie Alexander, of Brooklyn, New York; husband, Allen Cruz of Long Island, New York; four daughters, Annette (Reginald) Douglas of Valley Stream, Chiquita (Stevie) Solomon of Queens, Dana (Jason) Grant of Dayton, Ohio, and April (Jaysen) DeLandro of Hampton, Virginia; Monica Perkins, who was like a daughter, of Birmingham, Alabama; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren expected; two sisters, Michelle Vann of Atlanta and Renee Alexander of New York, New York; Martha Green, who was like a sister, of Sumter; eight brothers, Marcus Solomon of Bishopville, Ronald (Debra) Solomon of Myrtle Beach, Arnold (Michelle) Vann of Cocoa, Florida, Donald Vann of Detroit, Sean Vann of Detroit, Keith (Patricia) Vann of Nashville, Tennessee, Kevin Vann of Detroit and Vernon Vann of Atlanta; and a host of extended family members and friends.
